ArtMolds Vacuum Chamber To assure a bubble-free mold when mixing rubbers and silicones a vacuum chamber is required. The ArtMolds Vacuum Chamber is design for deairing (eliminating air bubbles) in rubbers. This PVC chamber, along with ½-inch Lexan plates make a safe and efficient unit. The vacuum chamber comes with all fittings, gauge, rubber gaskets, and top and bottom ½-inch plates. All you need is your power source and a vacuum pump that will pull 29-inches of mercury needed to deair your materials. We recommend the economical Robinair vacuum pump 4 CFM or higher, to use with your Vacuum Chamber. Specifications: Capacity: 4-gallons (approximately) Dimensions: 10-inch diameter by 12-inch tall Maximum Pull: 29-inches of mercury Weight: 20-pounds Vacuuming Process: Mix your rubber according to the manufacturers directions. The mixing container must hold at least four times the amount of material you are vacuuming, to allow for the expansion of the material. Once your vacuum reaches 29-inches of mercury, the material will begin to rise (resembling foam). When the material falls it will plateau and not rise any more. You will want to continue to vacuum for another 2- 3-minutes to make certain all of the air has been removed from your material. Release your vacuum, remove your material from the chamber. Pour the material slowly starting from the corner of the mold box, or mold, letting the material to flow freely into the box or mold cavity. This method will usually not introduce any new bubbles into the vacuumed material. To insure that the material is totally devoid of air bubbles you can place the entire mold/mold box into the chamber for an additional few minutes. This will assist the material into difficult areas of the mold/mold box.
Assembly Instructions: · Thread your gauge onto the brass fitting that will attach to the vacuum chamber · Take the assembled fitting with gauge and thread it into the side of the chamber · Place the Lexan plates on flat surface · Place one of the red gaskets in the center of the Lexan plates · Place the PVC cylinder/Vacuum Chamber evenly in the center of the gasket · The second red gasket is placed on the top chamber · The second Lexan plate will be placed over that gasket to seal your Vacuum Chamber · Connect your vacuum source

A Way to Preserve Your Pregnant Shape

A Belly Casting, or Belly Mask, as they are sometimes called, is a plaster form of a pregnant woman's stomach. (Actually, a woman's breasts are often included too.)It's a heartwarming way to capture what the mother's tummy looked like while she was pregnant with her little one. You can purchase a kit for this project, or you can find out how to make a homemade belly casting by following these instructions.
Some mothers choose to create several belly castings throughout their pregnancy. This way, they can preserve- in plaster forms- the changes that took place as their baby grew. Or, you can just make one homemade casting around the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy to show what your tummy looked like.
Before you begin making your homemade belly casting, getting an assistant to help you would be a good idea. You'll also need to put on an old set of clothes. Remove rings, bracelets, and other jewelry that are on your hands or arms. Protect the floor where you'll be working with a drop cloth or a layer of old newspapers.
You'll need a bucket filled with warm water, petroleum jelly, and plaster tape to start out with. Cut the plaster tape into several strips that measure six, eight, and twelve inches long.
Now, you'll need to bare your body from right above your pubic region to your belly, and clear up to right above your breasts. Cover your pubic region with an old towel to protect it from the plaster tape. Spread a liberal amount of the petroleum jelly over the rest of this area. The petroleum jelly will help keep the plaster tape from sticking to your skin. To make a homemade belly casting, don't go more than halfway around the midsection.
Once the petroleum jelly has been applied, it's time to start making the actual belly mask. The best pose is to either stand up, or sit down, on the edge of a chair. You'll have to remain in this position for awhile, so make sure you're as comfortable as possible.
You and your assistant will have to work fairly quickly because the plaster dries in little time. Hold the first strip of plaster tape firmly and immerse it into the bucket of warm water. Wait a few seconds, then pull it out straight so it doesn't fold over itself. Hold the strip in one hand while you run two fingers over it to gently remove the excess water.
Smooth the first plaster strip across your skin above your breasts. Repeat the immersion process and layer more strips across this one in different directions. Make sure that you use the right size strips in order to get the full shape of the breasts and the tummy.
As you and your assistant apply and layer the plaster strips when you make your homemade belly casting, work your way down and around your sides. Then, work your way down over your tummy. Stop before you reach your pubic region. Now that the belly casting is complete, allow it to air dry for five to ten minutes.
Then, have your assistant carefully grab and jiggle the edges of the casting. This will help loosen it up from your body. Finally, have him or her gently lift the casting up and off your body. You'll want to wipe off the petroleum jelly, then wash your breast and tummy areas with soapy water. Rinse well, then gently dry your skin.
Place your homemade belly casting in a cool, dry area where it can set undisturbed for a couple days. It will need to thoroughly dry in order to become its strongest.
You can sand it with fine sandpaper if you want your casting to have a smoother finish. Or, you can coat it with shellac to help preserve it.

Make your own Soap

If you are looking for a unique party favor, guest soap, or maybe just a clever and crafty item to decorate the home with, try this very easy recipe for making a handmade decorative soap that will explode with a lush bouquet of floral fragrance and will impress your guests, gift recipient, or party goers.

You will need the following supplies:

2 lb Box – natural Glycerin soap found at most craft stores or online – We chose avocado cucumber
Plastic soap mold – We chose both square & circle shapes with a flower motif
Food coloring – We combined red & blue to make lavender
Soap fragrance – We chose a pear berry scent, but you can also mix a variety of different fragrances
1 package of clear lollipop bags – We chose these because of the already built in ribbon
1 piece of decorative scrapbooking paper, 12in. x 12in.
1 piece of plain white scrapbooking paper, 12in.x 12in. – We chose to make our gift tags, but you can also use label stickers instead of making your own
Raffia ribbon in a coordinating color – 1.5 to 2 yards, or 15 feet
Crafts scissors
Hole puncher
Glass measuring cup – We used one with a handle for easy pouring
Wax paper

Depending on the size of your mold, heat the desired amount of natural Glycerin soap in the microwave. We used 2 small pieces of soap for a medium size mold. So, for 2 small pieces heat on high for 10 seconds, then 5 seconds intervals until melted. Note: If you don’t have a microwave, a double boiler can be used.

Add food coloring, 2 – 3 drops per color. Next, add your soap fragrance, 3-6 drops. Stir quickly and pour in to your mold and let cool (20-40 minutes). While soaps are cooling, lay a piece of wax paper down on to your work space. Using your thumbs, apply gentle, constant pressure to release from mold.

Wait 1-2 days until soaps are firm before placing in to the clear bags. Now, for a few extra special touches, hand address paper gift tags or pre-made labels/stickers and set aside. Using your craft scissors, cut decorative scrapbooking paper into strips long enough to wrap around the center of your soap. Once you have determined the size of your strips, cut raffia ribbon the same length leaving enough so ribbon can be tied in to a bow.

If you are right handed, wrap a strip of decorative paper around the center of the soap & hold in place with your left hand. Using your right hand, wrap the raffia ribbon around and over the top of your strip. If you are left handed, just do the reverse. Before securing the ends of the ribbon, we ran it thru the gift tag then tied a bow at the ends. If you decide to do this step, punch a hole thru the top of your paper gift tag.

Gently place your nicely wrapped soap in to the clear lollipop bags and nicely tie the ribbon to create a bow. You now have a truly unique party favor, or unwrapped, an impressive and fragrant home décor item to add to the home.

“How To Make Your Own Candles”

Candle making has been around for thousands of years. It was once a necessity in order to have light at night; it is now a hobby that many people enjoy. Candle making continues to be a popular hobby for a variety of reasons. People make candles for their own personal use, it is a great craft project to do with older children, people make candle to give away as gifts, and people even make candles to sell and create a business out of it.

Making candles for your own personal use or to give away as gifts is extremely rewarding and easy to do. Many of the local craft stores supply all of the tools you will need in order to make your own candles. You can buy wax, wicks, and molds from almost any craft stores. With the popularity of the hobby, craft suppliers have also made things like color, decorations, and fragrance readily available for homemade candles.

The rest of the supplies needed for candle making can be supplied by the hobbyist. The first step in candle making is to prepare the wax. You do this by melting it in a double boiler. A double boiler is simply one large pot filled with water and placed on the stove top. Another smaller pot that contains the un-melted wax is sat inside the larger pot. Wax will burn when you try to melt it so using a double boiler makes it easy. Once the wax is melted, hold the wick in place in the middle of the mold and pour in the wax.

Allow the wax to cool for about four to six hours before you attempt to remove it fro the mold. Sometimes putting the entire thing into the freezer for about a half an hour will make it easier to remove the candle from the mold. You can also spray non-stick cooking spray into the mold before you pour the wax into it so it is easier to remove the finished candle.

There is almost no end to the different types of candles you can make at home. With the different fragrances, colors, and decorations your only limit is your imagination. Some candle making enthusiasts have gone as far as to make their own molds using liquid latex in order to create amazing candles. The only problem with using latex molds is that they typically are too flexible to stand on end to pour the wax into the bottom of them. What you will need to do is to cut a hole in a piece of sturdy cardboard. The whole needs to be big enough for the mold to slip through but only up to the lip. All latex molds need a lip on the bottom for this purpose. The wax can then be poured into the bottom of the mold and the cardboard will act as support.

Some entrepreneurs have found that selling candles can be a lucrative business. They have taken their love of the hobby and their talent and turned it into a great way to make money. They do this by buying their supplies in bulk at discount prices. They also take time and effort into packaging their products attractively. The thing that really drives them is their imagination. People are always looking for something new when it comes to this old custom.

Just before Christmas, I was commissioned to make molds for a whole new world, for me. Polymer clay.

Several months ago, I received an email from a lady who was interested in my mold making instruction ebook. Her question to me was, “will this also work for polymer clay?” I couldn’t see why not. Now I better understand the question.

First, let me tell you, I had no idea there was a new world to discover. Polymer clay is a big subject!

As I worked with this young man, getting workable molds for him, I learned about a whole other media, I had never before paid any attention to. To my surprise, folks are making bank on polymer clay figures. It’s an art form. Well, I have to say, I know more today, than I did 6 months ago, about molds. Who woulda thunk.

If this is a new subject to you too, try googling ‘polymer clay’ and see what a vast subject this really is. Then check for polymer clay on ebay. Your eyes will open, about like mine did.

So now I’m helping someone to develop a whole new line of molds for pressing clay. What’s more, the two of us brain storming together, we’ve come up with a whole new concept of molds. That should be interesting.

I’ve used Sculpey in the past, for modeling small items to be finished in resins but now my eyes are opened to a world, I never even knew existed.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. I’m here to differ. I’m an old dog and boy, have I learned some new tricks. :)

The fact that you are reading this article shows that you are possibly as keen as I am, in putting these new mould making and casting materials to work for you. You may have some concept that would work if only you could produce multiple items at a low cost. Perhaps a carving, sculpture or a garden statue that would make you money if only you knew how to reproduce it.

It takes something out of the ordinary to get me excited, but I must tell you the mould making and casting products we are receiving lately just get better and better. For thousands of years we have relied on some form of plaster to make moulds and castings. Not any more, the silicones and polyurethanes are here to stay. New products keep arriving and more importantly the prices keep getting lower and lower.

Why mould making and casting are such great ways to make money.

Firstly the cost of the raw material is low and getting lower all the time, while your selling prices are high in comparison, as they have nothing to do with your raw material costs. The selling price is determined by the beautiful pot you have made not the few cents you paid for the plaster or concrete to make it. Casting can make you a lot of money providing you master the few simple techniques required and work with materials that have been tested and proven to be suitable for the task at hand.

The second most important reason for a successful money making venture with mould making and casting is in the nature of the process. Unlike most craft projects you do not have to start from scratch every time you make an item You make a mould of your original and then put some material into the mould, which reproduces your original – like magic! You do not have to keep on going through the time consuming process of making your original over and over again. The mould does it for you.

The secret that potters discovered hundreds of years ago is now yours, to reproduce items that previously would have required huge machines and big investment. For instance, using these new materials, reproduction parts are being made for vintage cars simply and easily. Plastic parts originally injection moulded can be made in a simple polyurethane or silicone mould by reproducing from an original and you can’t tell the difference.

When I consider the potential that mould making and casting offers a would be entrepreneur, I’m inclined to become a little too enthusiastic – so I will temper my remarks with caution and just try to indicate where I perceive the opportunities to lie. After all it must be your determination and persistence that will count in the end – not mine.

What are the plus factors? Well here are a few to consider. You can start off calling it a hobby or craft while you are trying out one thing or another and build up your experience, until you find your niche market.

You can work at your own pace and set your own hours. You can work at home completely independently of others. You can use your own designs often modelled on what you see around you and you can make them yourself. Anything you can model in clay, wax or wood can be your starting point.

A mould making and casting business can be started with very little money. Starting small has many advantages. Firstly it gives you the opportunity to gain experience while you try various ideas and products. All the while you are building up a basic business kit and the necessary skills. Don’t jump in without experience.

You can operate from anywhere, thus cutting rent costs in the early stages. City or country it doesn’t matter. Some of our most successful customers are not located in cities. For instance a plaster or concrete casting business has great advantages in country areas. The product is heavy and difficult to ship from the city. A local manufacturer has many advantages.

If you have enquired previously about mould making or casting, you will already know how little printed material there is on the subject, and what there is, is hopelessly out of date. There simply does not seem to be anywhere to acquire the necessary knowledge. Fortunately we have the necessary experience in this area to be of help to you

In this business we are referred to as “copy artists”. Buy an item from the local flea market, modify, enhance, make a mould, cast, decorate and sell.
